SCS Faculty Job Expectations

Core Convictions

The teacher gives testimony that he/she has a sense of God’s will, that teaching is his/her calling, and that teaching in this Christian school is God’s direction.  The teacher accepts without verbal or mental reservations both the Statement of Faith and the Educational Philosophy and Objectives of this school and is committed to upholding them.

The teacher affirms that, as part of the qualifications for this position, he/she is a “Born Again” believer who knows the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. (John 3:3, I Peter 1:23)

The teacher will faithfully attend and financially support a local church whose fundamental beliefs are in agreement with the Statement of Faith of this school (Hebrews 10:25).

The teacher will manifest by precept and example the highest Christian virtue and personal decorum, serving as a Christian role model to pupils (I Timothy 4:12), both in and out of school (Luke 6:40), and as an example to parents and fellow faculty members in judgment, dignity, respect, and Christian living.

The teacher agrees to follow the Biblical pattern of Matthew 18:15-17, and Galatians 6:1, and to always give a good report.  All differences are to be resolved by utilizing Biblical principles - always presenting a united front.  Appropriate confidentiality will be observed in regard to pupil, parent, and school matters (Titus 3:2 and Galatians 5:15 TLB).

The teacher agrees that the Bible dictates the standards for sexual behavior.  Any promiscuity, homosexuality, or other deviant sexual behavior is forbidden and as such violates the bona fide occupational requirement of being a Christian role model.  The unique roles of the male and female are clearly defined in Scripture.  Romans 1:24-32, states that God recognizes homosexuals and other deviates as perverted.  Deviation from Scriptural standards is grounds for termination (Romans 12:1-2; I Corinthians 6:9-20; Ephesians 4:1-11, 5:3-5; I Thessalonians 4:3-8; I Timothy 4:12; II Timothy 2:19-22; I Peter 1:15-16, 2:15-17; I John 3:1-3).

The teacher agrees to refrain from such activities as use of tobacco, illicit drugs, the use of vulgar and profane language, and the abuse of alcohol (Col. 3:17 KJ, Titus 2:7-8 TLB, I Thess. 2:10 TLB, I Thess. 5:18, 22-23 KJ, and James 3:17-18).

Core Requirements

The teacher acknowledges that he/she is fully aware of his/her obligations under state law regarding child abuse reporting requirements and that he/she will fulfill those obligations.

The teacher will provide the Administrator with a copy of a valid Pennsylvania State, ACSI or equivalent teacher certificate and an official transcript of all college and graduate studies prior to the first day of school.

The teacher agrees to work toward, apply, and maintain ACSI teacher certification.  A teacher new to this school must complete the requirements for ACSI certification within 2 years of commencing teaching at this school before being eligible to be considered for a new contract in the third year.

The teacher will maintain documentation and clearances required by Salem Christian School and/or commonwealth authorities.

All state medical requirements for a teaching position, with proof of such, must be filed with the school before the start of school.  Upon request, the teacher agrees to submit to a physical examination by a licensed physician at school expense and to furnish the school with a copy of a physician’s report.

Assignment to room, grade, subject, and extracurricular duties is to be made at the discretion of the Administrator after consultation with the teacher.  He/she agrees to accept his/her proportionate amount of supervision outside of the regular classroom assignment.  The extent of such supervision and assignment is to be determined by the Administrator who will seek as fairly as possible to achieve equity in all staff assignments.

A teacher new to the staff will be given an orientation period of ninety (90) days in which to prove his/her teaching ability to the satisfaction of the Administrator and School Committee.  Should such teaching not prove to be satisfactory as determined by the Administrator and School Committee, this contract terminates at that time without further obligation by either party.

The teacher will not enter into responsibilities, or obtain other employment, which will in any way conflict with his/her teaching assignment.

Core Responsibilities

The teacher will strive at all times to understand, appreciate, love, and serve the pupils entrusted to him/her for instruction, and will to the best of his/her ability provide for their fullest spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional development.

The teacher will maintain a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning.  This includes maintaining a professional appearance in accordance with the school dress code.

The teacher agrees to be present on time for faculty devotions, which begin each school day, and to remain in the building fifteen minutes after classes have been dismissed.  He/she also agrees to remain after school for such meetings and conferences as are called by the principal.

The teacher will follow, maintain and update the curriculum mapping as required or instructed by the administration.

The teacher will, as much as possible, avoid highly debatable topics that tend to divide evangelical believers.  A student is to be referred to his/her local church if a debatable topic of a theological nature arises.

The teacher agrees that if at any time during his/her period of employment, he/she cannot hold true to the above articles, and finds himself/herself out of harmony or sympathy, or in discord or disagreement with the philosophy, standards, or administration of the school, he/she will immediately make that fact known to the Administrator.  Unless the lack of harmony, discord, or disagreement can be harmoniously adjusted without publicity, the teacher agrees to voluntarily withdraw from this employment, or be subject to termination for cause.

Core Dispositions

A teacher ought to be slow to anger, reasonable in all dealings, maintaining confidentiality, acting professionally at all times, and limited in sarcasm.  Student supervision and safety are of utmost importance and therefore being organized and prepared are essential.

Miscellaneous

Any teacher, who is uncertain as to the Lord’s leading by the deadline for returning contracts, may be considered with other applicants for the open position by submitting a written request to the Administrator’s office by the due date of the contract.  As final applicants are considered, the current teacher who expresses this interest would be notified.  In the case of essentially equal qualifications between the current employee and another applicant, the current employee will be given the first consideration.

The teacher will follow the instructions and guidelines within the faculty handbook and the requests of the school administration.

The teacher must give the Board one month’s prior written notice of intended resignation unless a different termination date is mutually agreed upon.  If the teacher resigns or is terminated during the period of service covered by this contract, payment shall be made of that proportionate part of the annual salary which would end on the last day of employment.  All of the employer’s property in the teacher’s custody must be returned before he/she is entitled to final payment of any amount due upon separation.

The teacher understands that Salem Christian School is a nonprofit church-related organization (a ministry of Salem Bible Church, Macungie, PA) and is exempt from participating in the Federal Unemployment Tax Act.  Therefore, upon termination of employment, regardless of the reason(s), unemployment benefits are not available.
