- Instructor of Writing, Rhetoric, & Worldview
Description
Iron Academy is seeking an Instructor of Writing, Rhetoric, & Worldview to help form young men who can think clearly, write effectively, and speak courageously. This role exists because words matter—especially now. As education enters an era where artificial intelligence can generate language without judgment, conviction, or conscience, how a young man thinks, writes, and speaks will increasingly reveal who he actually is. Writing, rhetoric, and worldview formation are not neutral skills; they form discernment, responsibility, and moral clarity. This instructor is entrusted with shaping the intellectual and moral voice of young men—training them to do the kind of deep, truthful, human work that cannot be outsourced to a machine and must be formed in the presence of others, under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Because of this moment, we have a rare opportunity to add a teacher whose calling is not merely to teach content, but to build men. This is weight-bearing formation work. For the person created for the blessings and trials of forming young men through
sustained reading, disciplined writing, honest revision, and courageous speech—within a demanding Christian discipleship community—this role may be the calling of a lifetime.
For someone who cannot articulate a deep desire to contend for clarity, truth, and formation in a rapidly changing world, this might be a deeply frustrating position.
The Role
The Instructor of Writing, Rhetoric, & Worldview guides students through the disciplined work of thinking and expression—helping them move from reaction to reflection, from opinion to argument, and from raw insight to refined clarity.
The classroom is centered on careful reading, sustained writing, revision, and thoughtful dialogue. Students are trained to tell the truth clearly, evaluate ideas honestly, and speak with humility and courage.
This vital member of our staff anchors Iron Academy’s high school program in deep, meaningful work. Students linger with texts, wrestle with ideas, revise their thinking, and learn to communicate with clarity and responsibility—forming the intellectual stamina and discernment required to engage complexity and lead wisely in a demanding world.
Requirements
Core Responsibilities
Teach multiple sections of high school focused on writing, reading, and public speaking
Coach students through the full writing process, including multiple rewrites
Lead text-centered Socratic discussions rooted in curricular reading
Train students to speak publicly with clarity, composure, and gravity
Help students examine virtue and vice, worldview, and moral consequence in authors, arguments, and history
Intentionally build a biblical worldview, while helping students identify and critically engage competing worldviews
Serve as a full participant in Iron Academy’s discipleship culture and community life
A Word About Fit
Iron Academy is not seeking a highly-degreed academician who prefers abstraction over formation.
We are seeking a craftsman-teacher—someone who writes well, coaches patiently, speaks clearly, and loves the slow, faithful work of building better writers, thinkers, and public speakers.
Strong candidates may come from traditional public or private schools, Christian or classical schools, homeschool co-ops, or higher education. Experience with structured writing programs (such as IEW) or Socratic teaching is welcomed but not required. What matters most is proven effectiveness in reading student work closely, giving actionable feedback, and walking students through growth over time.
Next Steps
Qualified and interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter to Alan Hahn (hahn@ironacademy.org) and Candace Armogida (carmogida@ironacademy.org). The cover letter should clearly articulate why you feel called to Iron Academy—and to this role in particular.
Iron Academy is not for everyone. We are intentionally and unapologetically distinct. Candidates are encouraged to approach this opportunity with prayer, discernment, and clarity. Discipleship is demanding and Iron Staff often go where discipleship calls: field trips, Crucible Camp, baptisms, etc.
For the right person, this is not simply a teaching position. It is a place in the forge.
