Rosslyn Academy is a vibrant international Christian school in Nairobi, Kenya, offering a North American curriculum and standards, from Preschool through Grade 12. Founded in 1947, our diverse community of 700+ students represents over 50 nationalities.
We are fully accredited with both the Middle States Association (MSA) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). We have an international staff, mostly recruited from the United States and Canada. Rosslyn Academy is a joint effort of the Eastern Mennonite, Southern Baptist, and Assemblies of God missions in Eastern Africa, though the school is non-denominational in faith, practice, and hiring.
Located in a beautiful 40-acre campus in Nairobi, we offer a supportive, faith-driven community and a competitive compensation and benefits package that allows for a comfortable standard of living in Nairobi. Our contracts are usually for 2 years. Rosslyn's compensation package is benefits heavy and salary light (relative to the entire package that is). Benefits include: Housing (including utilities, internet, security, etc.), Free tuition for staff children up to 3 kids, if both spouses are working (combined FTE of 1.5), International Health Insurance coverage (Excluding the US) for the family, payment of all local/Kenyan taxes on salary and all benefits (Kenya charges about 30% taxes on all benefits and salary), furlough flights for the family to home country every two years and the opportunity to be part of a vibrant international Christian community.
Responsibilities
The School Counselor provides short-term, research-based counseling to students whose social, emotional, or behavioral challenges impact their academic and personal success. Key responsibilities include developing 504 Accommodation Plans and Behavioral Intervention Plans, supporting teachers in implementing these plans, and consulting on student behavioral or emotional concerns.
The role actively participates in the Response to Intervention Team, Student Life Network, and Child Protection and Advocacy Network. The counselor assists the Child Safety Team with investigations, safety assessments, and student support interventions, and helps design effective crisis-intervention programs. They respond to crises as needed and maintain thorough documentation of student cases and urgent situations.
Additional duties include coordinating therapeutic or preventive group programs, overseeing transition support for new and departing students, and facilitating referrals for long-term counseling while serving as a liaison with outside agencies.
Strong collaboration and communication are essential, including maintaining relationships with students, parents, and staff, attending meetings, participating in school committees, and providing progress reports as needed.
Requirements

- Exhibit a continuing sense of God’s calling to service at Rosslyn Academy.
- Demonstrate a respect for diversity of culture, religion, and different Christian traditions.
- Demonstrate an appreciation for the diversity of the body of Christ.
- Possess a Degree in counselling from a US/Canadian accredited tertiary body.
- Hold a counselling certificate from an authorized governmental agency from the individual’s home country and an ability to pursue certification as a counselor in Kenya. OR already licensed in Kenya.
- Show evidence of recent professional growth.
- Give evidence of previous successful counselling experience utilizing research based and school based interventions.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child development and an ability to integrate an understanding of Christian personhood with counseling theories.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
- Demonstrate the ability to use technology for word processing, Google Docs & Spreadsheets, and the School Information Database System (PowerSchool).
- Demonstrate a life congruent with the Basic Tenants & Child Safety Code of Conduct of Rosslyn Academy.
- Previous international travel and understanding of TCK’s and CCK’s is preferred.
