The School Counselor supports the holistic development of our students — academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually — in alignment with our Christian mission. This role seeks to nurture each child’s growth in Christ, build a supportive school community, and partner with families, staff, and leadership to help students thrive and flourish.
Requirements
- Develop and teach monthly Spiritual Growth / Social-Emotional Lessons for grades K–8, integrating scripture, biblical teaching, and Christian values with practical social-emotional learning and behavioral topics. - Offer daily counseling sessions for students in acute need – including emotional distress, behavioral concerns, peer or family issues, spiritual questions, or crisis. - Provide short-term, weekly counseling sessions (individual or small group) or students with ongoing needs for (i.e. up to 5 sessions before evaluating the need for referral to outside resources). - Facilitate regular “lunch-bunches” throughout the year to promote healthy peer relationships and socialization. - Create and distribute a monthly newsletter detailing the upcoming month’s Spiritual Growth lesson, and offering counseling-related information and resources families may find beneficial. - Serve as leader of the Middle School Student Council Association: organize and run weekly meetings, guide members in leadership and servitude, encourage student voice, and help plan social events, service projects, or outreach projects. - Lead a weekly Discipleship Group for a small group of upper school students, guiding them through a biblical curriculum, facilitating meaningful discussion, and nurturing their spiritual growth and development. - Collaborate with teachers and other team members (co-counselor, administration, school nurse, The Learning Edge) to identify and address social-emotional or behavioral issues seen in classroom or other settings. Provide consultation, guidance, and, when helpful, mini-lessons or strategies for supporting students’ social-emotional development in class. - Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about concerns, recommended supports, and referrals — ensuring partnership between home and school. - Maintain documentation of counseling sessions, interventions, referrals, etc. - Occasionally provide staff training or development (e.g., review social-emotional/behavioral strategies, classroom management strategies, identifying at-risk students) if needed.
