ABOUT DA
Dakar Academy is a vibrant day and boarding school situated in the cultural hub of West Africa — Dakar, Senegal. For more than 50 years, DA has provided a quality K-12 Christian education with the mission to help our students develop a Christian worldview that permeates their life and challenges them to achieve their full potential academically, physically, socially, spiritually and morally. We are the only accredited boarding program on the African continent, and are introducing both preschool and special education classes for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Our campus is incredibly diverse, with more than 200 students (13% of whom live full time on campus), representing 30 different nationalities. Our 6-acre campus in the heart of the city provides our students with an active quality of life, offering air conditioned classrooms, the largest English library in West Africa, athletic facilities and playgrounds, a student-run café, and well-tended gardens and shade trees.
ABOUT DAKAR
The capital city of Senegal, with a population of over 3 million, is situated on a peninsula and is the farthest western point on the African continent. Senegal was formerly a French colony, achieving independence in 1960, and Dakar still maintains a strong French influence. Temperatures range from the low 60s in cool season to the high 90s in hot season. Senegal has a democratically-elected, secular government. Over 95% of the inhabitants are Muslim, although Dakar also has a noticeable Catholic influence. The national mentality of "Teranga" (hospitality) allows for a blending and acceptance of cultures and belief systems unique in West Africa. Dakar boasts a wide variety of restaurants, markets, beaches, and cultural experiences.
School History
Dakar Academy was established in 1961 by United World Mission as a college preparatory, co-educational boarding and day school program primarily for missionary kids (MKs), providing kindergarten through grade 12. Since then, the school has grown to serve many families working in various christian and secular fields throughout West and North Africa. The school is governed by a board made up of members from our founding and partnering institutions: United World Mission, WorldVenture, the Assemblies of God, and imbConnecting.
Benefits
Dakar Academy offers a stipend and benefits including furnished housing, utilities, and medical insurance subsidy. Staff are encouraged to raise additional financial support to cover travel, student loans, savings for retirement, and to defray the cost of living in Dakar.
