School Profile
International Academy of Suriname
School Overview
The International Academy of Suriname (IAS) is a private, non-profit international Christian school for grades Pre-K through 12. IAS is a caring community committed to providing a quality North American education in the English language from a biblical worldview, seeks to instill respect for all cultures, zeal for lifelong learning, and passion for personal excellence. It is accredited by both ACSI and MSA.
The school is located on a well-landscaped campus in a quiet residential suburb of Paramaribo. Facilities include 17 classrooms, a computer lab, a science lab, lunch service, library, 3 outdoor recreation areas, an athletic field, gymnasium, and stage. The campus is protected by 24-hour security, including a guard and security cameras. IAS provides an ideal place for professional staff to experience the wonderful multicultural mix that is typical of Suriname, while serving the Lord through education. Our teachers enjoy small class sizes, an attractive facility, a supportive environment, comfortable housing, and close Christian camaraderie.
With a pleasant climate year-round, Suriname is known for its friendly and accepting people; and our staff has the unique opportunity in their off-time to explore Suriname’s array of ecotourism resorts, jungle villages, historical sites, and more.
Successful candidates will successfully pass through the BCMIntl.org admission process.

School History
“The American School”
SURALCO, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), founded a school in the mid 1960’s to accommodate their expatriate employees. In 1966, the West Indies Mission opened a school for their children and the children of other missionary agencies. The two schools merged in 1984 and the missionary community operated the new entity. The new school was known as the American Cooperative School. People in Paramaribo still know us as “the American school.” The IAS Board bought the current campus from SURALCO shortly after the merger.
Wycliffe Bible Translators (SIL) provided the majority of the staff over the years. Their plan to withdraw from Suriname in 2001 meant the teachers they provided would no longer be available to the school. IAS operates as an independent Internatioanl School with accreditation through ACSI and MSA.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
IAS is a Place to Thrive. We have decades of successful graduates who have been forever impacted by the gospel. Many students come to the International Academy of Suriname with no knowledge or understanding of Christianity. It is a great mission opportunity for educators who wish to be involved in life change and transformation in beautiful Suriname.
