School Profile

JMS

School Overview

JMS is the largest Christian school in the Juniata-Perry-Snyder County area. Over fifty churches are represented that reflect an evangelical student body. JMS is a K-12 college prep course of study with plans on adding pre-K classes and a second course of study in grades 9-12 to meet the needs of the skill-based/entrepreneur student. Located in Pennsylvania's beautiful Ridge and Valley area of Central PA, JMS has nearly a 25 acre campus nestled outside the village of McAlisterville. Established in 1954, JMS became a patron-owned organization in 1980 who meet annually to select a rotation of Board members. The families are very active in their support with every parent participating in four major fund raisers per year. With strong financial values, JMS has nearly 30 full-time and part-time faculty and staff members. JMS is recommended for full accreditation and will receive this status from Middle States in October 2016.

School History

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Juniata Mennonite School (JMS) was founded in 1954 as Delaware Mennonite School, by a group of Mennonite families seeking a Christian alternative to public school education. Thirty-nine students in grades 1–10 attended at that time. The school’s name was changed to Juniata Mennonite School during a 1980 re-organization from a church-owned school to a patron-owned structure that continues today. A 1988 move to the school’s present location upgraded the school’s facilities and furthered the school’s growth potential.

JMS currently serves Christian families from over 50 area churches while retaining a commitment to promoting an education of uncompromising Christian values and extraordinary academic excellence. In December of 2001 the board of trustees approved a resolution to begin the addition of high school grades for the fall of 2002 with a view of becoming a full kindergarten through 12th grade institution. This vision was fulfilled in the 2005–2006 school year. Our prayer is that the future of Juniata Mennonite School would continue to build upon the foundation of Jesus Christ which was laid through the labors of so many in the past.
