School Profile
Little Light Christian School
School Overview
Little Light Christian School is an outgrowth of Little Light Ministries. We are a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization located in the heart of Oklahoma City.
Our purpose is to provide a distinctly Christian education in an atmosphere of love and restoration. We intervene early with prayer, a therapeutic atmosphere, and loving relationships. Since our inception in 2012, we have served over 100 students. We primarily serve low-income families from racial minorities whose children would not likely have access to a private Christian school in other circumstances. Many children with incarcerated parents struggle with depression, behavioral issues, PTSD, and anxiety disorders. These challenges make it difficult for these students to complete their education. We believe that a strong education lays the foundation our students need to break the cycle in their families, so we are committed to breaking down the barriers to a high-quality education that children of the incarcerated may have.
To ensure that we provide a high-quality education for our students, we combine many learning methods and use solid Christian curricula to meet the varying needs of our students. We keep our class sizes small (under 10 students), ensuring each student has ample opportunity for one-to-one instruction from their teacher. We offer a comprehensive and challenging curriculum, along with a robust fine arts program including individualized music lessons, a Little Light band, choir practices, and art lessons. We also seek to tend to the emotional and spiritual needs of our students. Little Light Christian School offers five therapeutic tracks, integrating music, art, play, horticulture, and relationship building into each day.
Aside from providing for our students’ academic, emotional, and spiritual needs, we are also committed to meeting the practical needs of each family we serve. We provide each student with their school uniform, which includes Little Light school short sleeve and long sleeve shirts, a Little Light jacket, a winter coat, and shoes. Our students receive a hot breakfast and lunch each day, as well as two snacks. Students are also sent home with food each Friday to help food-insecure families through the weekend. To further increase accessibility to our school, we also provide transportation to students who live within a certain distance from our school. Little Light Christian School is tuition-free, as our services are paid for through individual and corporate donations and grants.
Little Light Christian School knows that a high-quality education is one of the keys to breaking the cycle of generational incarceration, and we are committed to removing the barriers that hinder children with incarcerated parents from receiving this education.
School History
A Little Of Our Story
In 1990, Robin Khoury was praying at her kitchen table when she got an impression from God that someday she would have a school for kids that came from lower-income areas. Nothing happened for 18 years, except for some random thoughts and journal entries. In the meantime, Robin was homeschooling her sons and volunteering with kids at her church. When her boys went off to college, Robin switched from working with children to prisoners. She helped provide church services at the Federal Transfer Center and mentored women at Mabel Basset Maximum Security Prison. Then one day she went to a summit on women’s incarceration.
IN HER OWN WORDS:
I was listening to the speakers, and someone started talking about the problems that children with incarcerated mothers have: anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and behavior problems. And then I heard God whisper, “These are the kids for your school. These are the kids I’ve been talking about.” The whole thing came full circle at that moment. I incorporated Little Light Ministries the next day. It took us 3 years to open the school. We opened in the fall of 2012 with 6 students. Today we have 30+ students on a 9.5-acre campus in Northeast Oklahoma City.
