School History

On July 10, 1949, a business meeting of First Baptist Church of Walnut Creek was called to order by Pastor Cunningham. At this meeting, a resolution was passed to form a Christian day school named Walnut Creek Christian Academy. The opening date was set for September 12, 1949, using the Sunday School classrooms. The first year’s enrollment was fifty-five. The first graduating class came in 1951.

A wing was added to the campus in 1952. In 1964, the high school was added, with the first seniors graduating in 1968. The highest enrollment figure for all twelve grades reached 410 students. Seeking room to grow, the high school moved in 1970. It now operates independently as Berean Christian High School.

The Lord has had His hand of blessing upon the school as its ministry expanded. In 1979, construction on the gym began. This large undertaking was completed in 1982, when Pastor Tom Younger came to First Baptist Church. First Baptist Preschool opened its doors in 1985. In 1991, Phase I of the innovative remodeling of the church building began. The use of moveable walls provided two new classrooms for the 92-93 school year. Three new junior high classrooms were completed in September 1999.

WCCA is governed by school board members who are committed to the ministry of the Christian school. These First Baptist Church members are nominated by the pastor, principal, and chairman of the board. Constitutionally, the senior pastor is over all church ministries. The principal is hired as Minister of Education to be directly responsible to run the school. The principal presides as an ex-officio school board member who presents the agenda and makes recommendations to the board. The board is responsible for policy decisions.
