School Counselor / Teacher Job Description
Overview
Buckhannon Christian Academy is looking for a full-time School Counselor/Teacher. This hybrid role is uniquely designed to serve the whole student: relationally, spiritually, and academically. The position combines proactive student care through regular check-ins, structured social-emotional learning through the Friendzy curriculum, and classroom teaching responsibilities suited to the candidate’s educational background and certification.
The qualified individual must be an evangelical Christian committed to living a Biblical lifestyle. He/she is expected to demonstrate patience, humility, integrity, and kindness while performing his or her day-to-day duties. He/she must be devoted to prayerfully working with administration, faculty, students, and parents to develop and maintain a school which is thoroughly Christian and academically superb. The School Counselor/Teacher is directly responsible to the Administrator.

- Demonstrate genuine care for students’ spiritual, emotional, and academic well-being.
- Demonstrate the ability to accept and carry out responsibilities and make competent, professional decisions.
- Be willing to eagerly participate in professional development.
- Recognize the role of parents as primarily responsible before God for their children’s education and be prepared to assist them in that task.
- Maintain a personal appearance that is a Christian role model of cleanliness, modesty, good taste, and in agreement with school policy.
- Respectfully submit and be loyal to constituted authority. Shall notify the administration of any policy he/she is unable to support.
Qualifications
- Holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; a degree or coursework in counseling, psychology, education, social work, or a related field is preferred.
- Current ACSI and/or State Teaching Certificate preferred; school counseling licensure or certification is a plus.
- Two or more years of experience working with school-age children in a counseling, teaching, or ministry capacity is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Friendzy social-emotional learning curriculum or willingness to be trained and certified.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed care principles.
- Knowledge of computer technology required, including the ability to maintain student records and communicate with parents digitally.
- Willingness to pursue continuing education in school counseling, Christian education, and relevant content areas.
- Willingness and ability to assist in extracurricular activities or student leadership programs preferred.
Job Description
Counseling & Student Care
- Conduct regular, scheduled one-on-one student check-ins for K–12 students, with particular attention to students referred by teachers, parents, or administration for social, emotional, or behavioral support.
- Maintain confidential student care records in accordance with school policy and applicable law, and communicate relevant concerns to administration and parents in a timely manner.
- Serve as a first-response support for students experiencing personal, relational, or emotional difficulties, providing a safe, gospel-centered environment for honest conversation.
- Coordinate with administration and families when students require intervention, referral to outside counseling resources, or escalated support.
- Assist in the development and implementation of a Biblical framework for student wellness, integrating Scripture, prayer, and pastoral encouragement into the counseling process.
- Maintain professional and ethical boundaries in all student interactions, following BCA’s child protection policies and safe-touch guidelines at all times.
Friendzy Curriculum Instruction
- Plan, prepare, and deliver Friendzy social-emotional learning lessons across designated grade levels, integrating Biblical truth with the curriculum’s relational and character-building content.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to reinforce Friendzy concepts throughout the school day and across subject areas.
- Track student engagement and growth related to Friendzy outcomes; communicate progress to teachers and parents as appropriate.
- Facilitate group discussions, role-play scenarios, and classroom activities that build conflict resolution skills, empathy, and healthy peer relationships.
- Remain current on Friendzy curriculum updates, attend available training, and champion the program schoolwide as a visible component of BCA’s commitment to whole-person education.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Provide classroom instruction in content areas appropriate to the candidate’s degree, certification, and experience; specific assignments will be determined by administration based on school need.
- Integrate Biblical principles and a Christian worldview throughout all curriculum and classroom instruction.
- Must have the ability to learn and employ computer programs to post grades and communicate with parents.
- Develop and maintain lesson plans, assessments, and instructional materials consistent with BCA’s curriculum standards and BJU Press alignment where applicable.
- Maintain clear, open, and professional communication with parents regarding academic progress and student well-being.
- Work with administration to keep parents adequately informed of any student discipline matters involving their child.
- Must have the willingness and ability to assist in total school programs and extracurricular activities.
